‘Shrivelled PM can’t function’: Top Tory claims ‘depressed’ Theresa May ‘struggled to engage’ at recent meeting as leadership challenge rumours grow
Tories fear Mrs May might not be able to stick to pledge to stay in Downing Street
According to one senior official close to the PM, she is ‘very down at times’
Prominent MP said he was shocked by her condition at No 10 meeting last week
Senior Tories are concerned that a ‘shrivelled’ Theresa May is struggling to come to terms with her bungled Election campaign and the growing threat to her leadership.
They fear it could make it impossible for her to carry out her pledge to stay in Downing Street at least until the UK leaves the EU in 2019.
According to one senior official close to the Prime Minister, she is ‘very down at times’. A prominent Conservative who knows her well said he was shocked by her condition at a meeting in No 10 last week.
‘She looked shrivelled and struggled to engage. It was upsetting,’ the source said.‘But we cannot proceed like this indefinitely. It could open up a Pandora’s Box, but we may have to have a new leader.’
No 10 last night insisted that reports of the Prime Minister being ‘too depressed to function properly’ were ‘totally untrue’. ‘She is engaged and getting stuck in.’
One loyal Minister added: ‘It is nonsense. She has admitted the Election went badly but is determined to make the best of it. She is staying firmly put.’
